Description
Elvanse (Lisdexamfetamine)
Elvanse is a central nervous system stimulant, used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and moderate to severe eating disorders. It affects chemicals in the brain and nerves that contribute to hyperactivity and impulse control. Lisdexamfetamine will help to reduce the symptoms of hyperactivity and impulse behaviour and increase attention and concentration span. Lisdexamfetamine is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and adults. It is used as part of a comprehensive treatment programme that includes behavioural therapy.
Lisdexamfetamine is also used to treat moderate to severe binge eating disorder in adults. It is a prodrug of dextroamphetamine, covalently attached to the naturally occurring amino acid L-lysine. It is not to be used for obesity or weight loss. Usually given once each day. It is recommended to give the medicine in the morning but it can be given in the evening. Do not use lisdexamfetamine if you have taken an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days. Lisdexamfetamine blocking dopamine and norepinephrine reuptake and increasing their levels in the extraneuronal space.
A dangerous drug interaction could occur. Give the medicine at about the same time(s) each day so that this becomes part of your child’s daily routine, which will help you to remember. MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine, and others. Lisdexamphetamine can affect your child’s pulse and blood pressure so your doctor may need to check these before any changes can be made. Take lisdexamfetamine with or without food, first thing in the morning. Swallow it whole. Do not crush, chew, break, or divide a lisdexamfetamine capsule.
